Final Fantasy 1 Review

I jumped into this right after FFVI, earning 23/26 Xbox achievements or something like that. I didn’t bother to find all the monsters, treasure chests, or game within the game. Why not? Because I’m trying to play through nearly all the Final Fantasy games, maximizing each playthrough without worrying about a couple missed items.

I’m also interested in the chronological differences in each game - when did x become part of the series, when did y change? You had to buy white magic for white wizards, and black magic for black wizards. After talking to Bahamut later, you could class change and your warrior and thief could become a ninja and knight, using limited magic as well. However, each character could only use a couple spells per level at a time until they, themselves leveled up, maxing at 9 spells a time until they rested or used an ether/elixir.

The above image shows the MP at that character level. on the bottom wizard in the blue robe, they can use 9 basic spells, 8 level 2, 6 level 3, 5 level 4, 7 level 6, and so forth. It makes it difficult for leveling because you can’t just spam fire, but that’s fine.

This is Bahamut who teaches you to change your class. He later becomes a regular summons in other Final Fantasy games.

He’s located in here. Of note, apparently this was the first RPG to have a flying ship.

Intro cutscene. Final Fantasy later became pros at using negative and positive space.

Of course there’s humor. In the elf village, lies the grave of Link from Zelda.

Tiamat also becomes a summons in later games but here he is a major boss. Unoriginally, you have to fight him twice.

Chaos is the last boss and I do like the storyline. You fight a guy in the beginning who was sent back in time or something by the four gods who create a time cycle. You end up going back in time to kill them and Chaos who is the guy from the beginning to end the cycle. Half my party died because the boss healed himself for 9999.
