Hosted by Katsucon and held at the same Gaylord National Resort at National Harbor, Maryland, Station Unity is a much smaller three day convention held in August. 2024 will be August 16-18. This convention takes place mainly on one wing of the hotel next to the gazebo and is sci-fi based. This year, it ran simultaneously with an Avon conference which wound up fun for both attendees. People complimented each other most of the weekend and Avon gave away a mountain of free merchandise Saturday evening filled with light rings and car fresheners.
Contrary to what one may think, Station Unity is not necessarily a photo opt convention. While Katsucon has tens of thousands of people making it difficult to move around and have clean background photos, and that it’s held in the dead winter with zero foliage, you would think that Station Unity would be great for photos. The problem here is it’s held in the middle of August and too hot and humid for most people to go outside, especially dependent on their gear. This convention is a great opportunity to just relax, network, and enjoy the programming, or hangout with people you only get to see at conventions. It is not the kind of convention to expect huge results, those should be left to Katsucon, Otakon, MAGfest, and others in the DMV.
Station Unity does host guests. This year they invited Kristin Bauer, Jewel Staite, Christopher Larkin, Ricky Whittle, and model builder Snap Plastic Studios. There were also movies such as Dune for people to watch in the convention rooms.
